Yeast Experiments

We have been learning what yeast eats and what happens when yeast becomes active.
We have tried lots of experiments to find out.
First we added yeast, sugar and warm water to a bowl to watch what happens when yeast wakes up. Yeast is normally dormant (which means asleep) but becomes active when it its suger or starch and has warmth.
Eden said:
It looked like calm milk.
It smelled strong.
In the end it had more bubbles and the bubbles were the size of a mushroom.

In our second experiment we were learning about the gas (Carbon Dioxide) that comes from the yeast when it eats the sugar. We put yeast, sugar and warm water in a bottle and put a balloon on top.
Alana said:
What I think will happen is the ballon will get a bit bigger.
When we shook it the balloon grew to the top.
This happened because there was so much Carbon dioxide made from the yeast eating the sugar that it filled the bottle and then started blowing the balloon up!!

Our third experiment was to test a variety of liquids to find out which one yeast likesto eat the best - and why it might like to eat it.
We added yeast to Coke, Lemon Juice, Milk, vinegar and warm water (no sugar).
Braiden thought the coke would go really really fizzy and overflow. He said once the yeast was added it looked like milo and smelt gross.
Lily thought thought the lemon juice would explode when the yeast was added. She said it smelle alright, and looked not bad (it separated).
Annaleise thought the water would turn white. She said it looked and smelt like milk.

When I Grow Up - by Kaitlyn

WALT follow the 'When I Grow Up' exemplar pattern to create our own piece of writing.

When I grow up.

When I grow up I want to be a vet because I like working with animals. I will see patients and their pets and help the animals. I will give them medicine if they need it and give the pet an injection.
When I grow up I want to go to Fiji for a holiday because my mum and my dad have been there. I will go and see the pools and swim in them. I will probably sleep in a motel and meet some nice people.
When I grow up I will be a famous horse rider because I like horses and ponies. I will be a show jumper and see some nice horses. I will have all kinds of horses and ponies and will probably teach little kids how to ride.
When I grow up.

Cross Country Recount. By Cam

"On your marks, get set..." Bang! Miss Currie slapped the two pieces of wood together and everyone sprinted off. I felt like I would come last. Down the straight I went. I was third until I got puffed and started jogging. I was challenging Tipene, one of my best friends. I just about tripped up in the mud. It was freezing. Corban was following me and he was shouting, " Go Cam go!" So I went a little faster and got past Chance. I felt all the puddles and the mud splashing on my knees. I was saturated and the wind was blowing into my face. On the second lap in the stoney part I past Tipene and he never caught up but Chance did right at the end and it was looking like a tie. I came sixth in the end. I was all wet, cold, frozen and muddy. I was excited and knew I had tried my hardest. After my race I went to McDonalds and had fun.

Jared's Explanation about Bikes

There are the pedals that make it move and the brakes that stop the bike. A mountain bike is special because it has gears. The gers help it go up hill. There is a chain between the pedals and back tyre. The chain goes around the pedal to move the back tyre so the whole bike will move. The chain is also hooked to this spikey thing on the back tyre. Your bike will work when your feet move the pedals. The brakes will work when you pull a lever. There are front brakes and back brakes. The handlebars are most important because thay steer the bike.

Dear Mrs Peck,

Thankyou for the flash cloakbay,Mrs Peck. It was worth all of the noise and the funny pictures on our window. When did you start building it? The space in the cloakbay is good for plays and acts. We will promise to keep our bags clean as well so that people can walk though when it is raining. How much did it cost to put the flash hooks and red and blue wallpaper in there? I love the sparkly glitter on the floor because it will stick to our shoes and we will take it home with us. Thankyou again for the great new clean toilets.

Yours sincerely,

Paige Carnaby

Dear Miley Cyrus,

Hi, my name is Jaime Duker and I live in Palmerston North. I am writing to you because you are a great singer and actor when you are Hannah Montana. I like you because you're like a rock star!! How do you get changed so quickly because i'm trying to do it every day but I can't do it as fast? You look the coolest when you wear a sparkly dress when you dance and sing. Thankyou for reading my letter. I hope you enjoyed it.

Yours sincerely,

Jaime Duker

More Growing

Today we 'planted' some more beans. These ones are different from our mung beans. We noticed that they also have a skin , but it is brown with black flecks. They are much bigger and more oval shaped, but also have the white line the mung beans started off with which ended up sprouting. We put these into some damp tissues. We wonder how long it will take for them to start changing.

Today we also planted some radish and pea seeds. The pea seed we planted into plastic containers, but made sure there were holes in the bottom so that the water could drain through. The odd thing is that we planted the radish seeds into balloons! It was a hard job for Miss Greene to put the potting mix into the balloon so she needed some help. It is a funny experiment but we hope the radishes will grow.
