Vegetable Inquiry

As part of our plant unit, we have now narrowed our focus to vegetables. Our big Inquiry question is 'How can we grow the best vegetables?'. Our mini Inquiry questions are 'What vegetables can we grow?', 'Which vegetables are the healthiest for us?', 'Which vegetables are the easiest to grow?' and 'What helps vegetables to grow?'. We are hoping to produce a poster or booklet with tips to help people grow vegetables and we are looking for vegetable recipes to create a recipe book (this links in with our Written Language focus at the moment, which is Procedures). We are finding the recipe search quite exciting and have issued all the recipe books from the school library!

Tiki Art

On Tuesday we did some tiki art. We had to draw our tiki with chalk onto black paper then colour with pastel. Look at how effective they are!

Mung Beans Part 2

After a week or more of growing our Mung Beans in water, some of Room 6 were curious about what they would actually taste like - so we tried them! Some people thought they were nice, others didn't. Jared thought they tasted like sweet peas.

Mung Beans

As part of studying plants, we are looking at what Mung Beans do when placed in a jar of water. Lots of us thought that they would not grow without being planted in soil. These are Camryn's observations so far:

11.5.09
The Mung Beans looked like a type of dark green. They were also VERY little. Miss Greene put some in a jar with water.

12.5.09
I noticed that the mung beans had grown longer and the longer ones were a lighter green. They stink and they have also got a brown bit around the white bit. Some of the green is coming off and changing into white. Some didn't grow so they are still little. Miss Greene changed the water.

13.5.09
I saw that the mung beans have gotten even stinkier and the green is coming off even more. They are also much lighter and the brown is still there. Miss Greene changed the water again.

E-Pals

E-Pals are when someone emails someone who is somewhere else. Our E-Pals are Russell Street School kids. We all have a buddy who is like us in some way. They wrote to us and we wrote back to them. On Thursday L.C. 6 will teleconference to our E-Pals. Teleconferencing is when people can chat to other people using a television. The cool thing is you can see them and they can see you. You can only teleconference someone if they have the right equipment though. The camera needs to be a camera like an eye toy camera.

The Esplanade

On Tuesday 12 May we went to The Esplanade for our Connected Curriculum. We had four rotations. One was at the Rose Garden, another one was the bush walk, the playground and the Conservatory. We looked at the things plants need to grow and found that different plants need different conditions, like the roses needed to be out in the open to get lots of sun, but plants on the bush walk liked the damp and cold. We had to do some observational drawings and take photographs. In the Conservatory the man gave us some cat's tails (fluffy plants) and banana leaves. We were tired and our legs were aching from the walk when we got back to school.
Thank you to the parents who came with us and helped us with our worksheets.

Hi All,

Since setting up this blog site we have been thinking about what we can write on here for you all to read and enjoy. We had an idea drought and thought we would wait until we had been to The Esplanade to report about that. Now we have lots to share! Read on to find out what we have been doing in Learning Centre 6!
